The Most Beautiful Movies On Netflix This Month...

As you know I'm a self diagnosed Netflix addict. Honestly I cannot for the life of me tell you what life was like before I had Netflix because I've blocked it out. Anywayz, now that you know how sick I am here are some of the most hauntingly beautiful films I've seen in a while.
(spoilers)

1. What Maisie Knew.

Told from the perspective of a 6 year old girl caught between her parents divorce, this movie is very emotional. Its very lovely and has a childlike aesthetic while juxtaposing with the dark story content. I liked Julianne Moore best of all the characters because she was the most dynamic. She was kind of a crappy Mom until she realized her kid was better off if she left… also I loved The Kills as the soundtrack for JM's band. That was a perf pairing. I enjoyed the second half of the movie better than the first half but I was mostly taken by the stunning cinematography and overall visual aesthetic. It definitely captured the beauty and wonder that a child would associate with their view of the world and it shows you how even in the darkest of circumstances an innocent mind will be able to find beauty.

2. Starlet.

Oh my Goddess I love this movie so effing much. I cannot say enough good things about this movie. Beautiful. Gorgeous. Dark. Uncanny. Captivating. Thought provoking. Emotion stirring… to name a few. This movie was recommended to me by my friend, now boyfriend Jason, and I fell in love with this movie in the first 5 minutes. It has everything I love, Girl protagonist, Bildungsroman with a revived character, edgy content with a touch of quirk, a cute animal character, and a happy ending. Its so good I don't even want to give anything away. Watch it. You won't be sorry.

3. Short Term 12.

This movie also really moved me because the story was so strong. As a victim of childhood sexual abuse and basically growing up in therapy since I was 16 years old the movie really hit home for me. I really related to the protagonist of the movie, (again female, you might be noticing a theme here) who struggled with PTSD (as I do) and whose relationships often suffer because of it. It also sheds a much needed inside perspective on mental illness, sexual abuse, and trauma. An area that is often greatly misunderstood and sadly still not taken seriously by many Americans. Not only was the story captivating and moving but the film itself also had a beautiful aesthetic and soundtrack. Definitely check it out, the ending is happy but there are some tear jerker moments I will warn you, especially if any of the issues mentioned in the film are of a personal nature to you as they are to me.

4. Little Birds

The acting in this movie is outstanding and holy crap is it gorgeous. The use of light and the visuals in this movie is just stunning. The story is great too. I had a little trouble getting into to but after the first twenty minutes I became drawn in. I just couldn't get enough of those bright, wide, detailed shots. Plus I love a good BFF movie. I always wanted a best girl friend that was like a sister. A bosom friend as Anne Shirley of Green Gables would say. I am going to give this another watch soon I think. I was painting while this was on so I'd like to give it another go with my full attention but if you liked any of the above films I mentioned than I'm confident you'll like this one too.
